Kumbhalgarh is located in the Western Aravalli hills and lies near Udaipur in Rajasthan, and is just the place for an ideal family vacation. It is popular as a world heritage site, but there are also other interesting places to visit in Kumbhalgarh.
There is a magnificent array of temples built by the Mauryas of which the most picturesque place is the Badal Mahal or the palace of the clouds. The fort also offers a superb bird’s eye view of the surroundings. The fort’s massive wall stretches some 36 km with a width enough to take eight horses abreast. Maharana Fateh Singh renovated the fort in the 19th century. The fort’s large compound has very interesting ruins and a walk around it can be very educative.
Kumbhalgarh Fort is easily reached by taking either regular buses or hiring a taxi from Udaipur city. The nearest airport is in Udaipur (98 km).
Situated in Rajsamand District of Rajasthan, this one is located near the much popular Kumbhalgarh Fort. The wildlife sanctuary is one of the places where the reintroduction of the Asiatic lion project is ongoing. There are numerous other species here but the star attraction is, of course, the lions.
The sanctuary surrounds the fort and is a haven for adventure lovers and birdwatchers. It is known for a wide variety of flora and fauna. There are more than 200 bird species in the sanctuary and you can spend an entire day here.
Ganga Govardhan Museum situated in Kumbhalgarh is a fabulous museum housing a great range of historic artifacts. The museum has a large collection of coins, crockery and weapons – part of the glorious history of the country. Such a large exquisite and riveting collection will leave you awe-inspired.

Haldighati is a unique historic mountain pass located in the Aravalli Mountain range. Haldighati derived its name from the term ‘Haldi’ which means turmeric in English, used as a spice in Indian delicacies and ‘Ghati’ means valley which together makes the name Haldighati. The soil found in this region of Udaipur is yellow in color, hence the place is named Haldighati.
The best time to visit Haldighati is the month between October and March. During this time, you can escape the unbearable heat of the sun. The months from July to September end are also favorable as rainy season acts a savior here.
Perched inside a cave, where Rishi Parshuram used to meditate, the Parshuram Temple is a must-see attraction during your day trip to Kumbhalgarh. Devoted to Lord Shiva, this cave temple has shrines of Lord Ganesh and nine holy kunds or ponds which never dry out. One needs to climb down approximately 500 steps to reach this amazing temple.
